Happy Gyalpo Losar ... an inside by Gham Chhaya team

Losar is  one of  main festival in our society basically  celebrate by buddhist community there are 3 losar which we celebrate every year start with Tamu Losar ,Sonam Losar and Gyalpo Losar ,As today is Gyalpo Losar  so sharing little information about it ,Gyalpo Losar is celebrated by the Sherpa and upper himalayan community’s  and also it is celebrations of Tibetan New Year. The Tibetan calendar consists of 12 lunar months and the first day of the first month is Losar. Sherpa, Tamang, Gurung,Bhutia, Yolmo ,and even some Rai and Limbu celebrate the losar festivals. Various communities and places are celebrating their way. This Losar is celebrated for almost 2 weeks or month. During the first three days, the major celebrations take place.

Chyang (Rice beer) is a drink called changkol on the first day. The second day is known as Gyalpo Losar (New year). Third-day people gather and share their love, respect and get blessings from their elders. The houses are cleaned; the kitchen in general needs to be properly cleaned because that is the spot the family eats. For the New Year celebration, several different dishes are served.

Among all dishes, soup is served with dumplings called Guthunk which is eaten two days before Losar as tradition.The soup consists of meat, rice, potatoes, wheat, yak cheese, green peppers, and radishes. People hang New Lungta on the top roof of house or some high place during Losar.Families meet to tidy up their homes the day before Losar. Once the clock hits at midnight, “Tashi Delek” will take over the traditional greeting and friends and family will stay late to welcome each other in the New Year. Visit local Gumpa (Monasteries) for blessings ,In local Gumpa(monasteries)where they performed many traditional ritual dances known as Cham that represent the battle between devils and gods which is really interesting to watch .
